SERIES: I am the AICP: Featuring Mark Wilson

Mark Wilson is the Senior Director of P&C Claims Regulatory Compliance for Nationwide Insurance.  He started his insurance career as a Claims Adjuster in Ohio, ultimately leading Claims Litigation teams responsible for resolving claims across the Eastern United States.  Along the way, he also took roles in Internal Audits and the Office of Compliance and Ethics.  His first job, like so many others, was working at McDonald’s, where he still remembers that if you have time to lean, then you have time to clean.

Guiding Star:  I find that even though I work for a large company, it really is a small world.  Throughout the years, I can’t tell you how many times I have had the opportunity to work again with people that I knew from previous positions.  I feel it is extremely important to treat people like I would like to be treated and maintain those relationships.

How Did You Fall into Insurance?  I originally planned to go into the Air Force, and always joked that I wouldn’t do anything in insurance as my Dad was an agent.  Funny how things work out.  I ultimately received my degree from The Ohio State University in Political Science and started my career.  Before I knew it, I found myself working at Nationwide, and how blessed I have been to work for such a great carrier.

Insurance is such a noble profession.  We both sell and deliver on a promise.  It is nice going home at the end of the day and knowing that I may have helped someone overcome what is often one of the worst days of their lives and made it a little better.

Other Education:  I received my MBA from Ohio Dominican University, and earned multiple business designations to include CPCU, FFSI, and CCEP®.  I am looking forward to getting the Associate Compliance Professional (ACP) and the Certified Compliance Professional (CCP)!

What Does AICP Mean to You?  AICP has reconnected me with friends, provided the opportunity to pass on my knowledge to the new generation of Claims Compliance Professionals, and a chance to positively impact the industry that I owe so much to.

Who is Your Hero?  It is my wonderful wife, Gretchen.  She is such a positive, loving and caring person.  She works with young children, and makes a positive impact every day, on the kids (mine included) in her care.  She is also a wonderful Mother (I call Most Favored Parent), whom my kids adore.  I learn from her every day and am very lucky to have her as a partner.

What Else Do You Do?  While I haven’t done it in a little while, I have played the drums since I was 8.  There is no better way to burn of steam, than to put on my favorite music and spending an hour pretending I am the drummer for Van Halen.  I am sure my neighbors may disagree, but they have been kind to date and not said anything.  I also love to read and grab every opportunity to read a book or listen to an audio book.  Finally, I am a huge Boston sports fan.  Go Sox!

Most Important Life Lesson, So Far: Don’t sweat the small stuff, it is all small stuff.
